Students pitch transport solutions at Case Competition final
Last month, five multidisciplinary engineering and IT teams took to the stage at the annual MSE Case Competition final, presenting their concepts for a Gateway Link and precinct solution for Fishermans Bend.
(L-R): Khoa Tran, Master of Engineering (Electrical with Business); Karina Lee, Master of Engineering (Mechatronics); Jacky Li, Master of Engineering (Mechanical with Business); Dean Peach, Master of Engineering (Mechanical); Steven Lam, Master of Engineering (Mechanical with Business).
Sponsored by industry partner WSP Australia, one of the world’s leading engineering professional services consulting firms, the 2019 Case Competition provided students with a unique opportunity to extend their learning beyond the classroom and interact with members from industry.
At the Stage 1 workshop held in March, WSP Associate Regina Moran and Associate Director David Yates tasked students with developing a Gateway project solution for the Fisherman’s Bend precinct – the site of Melbourne School of Engineering’s future campus. Moran and Yates provided insights into their industry and tips for crafting a successful pitch.
More than 150 students in 33 multidisciplinary teams then submitted a two-page bidding document in response to the challenge, with five teams being selected to pitch at the final on 14 May in front of their Professors, families and peers.
In a captivating display of student talent, the teams presented novel and forward-thinking transportation solutions, highlighting initiatives that not only addressed the precinct’s unique challenges but embraced the growing community in the area.
A panel of industry judges comprising Alex Catto-Smith (Offshore, Integrity Lead and PVI Engineer at ExxonMobil) and WSP’s Moran and Yates awarded the 2019 prize to the students in TT Consulting: Khoa Tran, Karina Lee, Jacky Li, Dean Peach and Steven Lam.
The winners will receive a 12-month mentoring experience and site visit with WSP Australia and will have their names included on the perpetual trophy.
