2017 Robogals Science Challenge

The Robogals Science Challenge is a nationwide competition that encourages girls aged from 5 to 15 to explore STEM fields by conducting science and engineering projects. Together with a parent or mentor, the girls will submit a video online that showcases their project and answer a few questions.

The Science Challenge is comprised of two parts – Minor Challenges and the Major Challenge.

For the Minor Challenges, students choose and complete two mini-projects amongst a list of predetermined topics ranging from chemistry to mechanical engineering.

Those who have completed the Minor Challenges are then eligible to enter a submission for the Major Challenge. In this section, students have the freedom to explore a project in-depth, on a topic of their own choosing. Examples of previous winning projects include making a Hovercraft, looking into rust removal and prevention, and creating a novel device that generates energy from green sources.

Individual students and pairs can enter one of three categories: Junior (ages 5 to 8), Intermediate (ages 9 to 12), and Senior (ages 13 to 15), and will be judged accordingly. This year, there also exists a separate Schools Category where teachers can enter whole classes (both female-only and co-ed classes will be accepted).

The competition runs until Tuesday July 28th, after which the submissions are judged and the finalists are announced. The top 3 entrants in each category, plus the ‘crowd favourite’ as voted online, will be awarded with a trophy and prizes such as robotics kits, and science kits.

Robogals is a student-run outreach organisation aiming to encourage young female interest in tertiary studies and careers in STEM fields. It does this through several initiatives including the Science Challenge and fun and interactive engineering workshops. Founded in 2008 by Melbourne engineering student Marita Cheng, the organisation has since expanded its reach to over 60,000 girls through its 35 University Chapters worldwide.
