Prestigious IBM Fellowship for Electrical PhD candidate

PhD student in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Valentin Muenzel, is one of only two Australians who have been been awarded a prestigious IBM PhD Fellowship for 2015 – 2016.

The IBM PhD Fellowship Awards is an intensely competitive worldwide program that honors exceptional PhD students who have an interest in solving problems that are fundamental to innovation in many areas of study including engineering, computing, mathematics and sciences.

Fellows are awarded a stipend for one academic year as part of the program, which may see them matched with IBM mentors with common research interests.

Valentin Muenzel is working on the EEE linkage project with industry partner Senergy Econnect Australia, investigating the effect of mass adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) on electricity distribution grids. He said that the fellowship would support his ongoing research on novel battery system layouts for electric vehicles and stationary energy storage.

Valentin’s academic supervisors are Dr Julian de Hoog, Professor Iven Mareels, Professor Doreen Thomas and Associate Professor Marcus Brazil.

The Melbourne School of Engineering congratulates Valentin on this significant achievement.
